What is an AI Visibility Score?
A single number, from 0 to 100, for how often AI assistants recommend your business when customers ask who to hire. Here is how ours is calculated, what a good score looks like, and what moves it.
Short answer: an AI Visibility Score measures how often ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity name your business in answers to the questions your customers ask. Ours averages fifteen answers — five questions asked of three assistants — scored by where you appear in each.
Why a score at all
Google gives you rankings and Search Console. AI assistants give you nothing: no report, no position, no way to see what they told the last customer who asked about your kind of business. The only way to know is to ask them, the same way a customer would, and write down what they say. A score turns those answers into one number you can compare month to month.
How it is calculated
- Five questions. Written the way customers ask: who to hire, a problem they have, a specific job, who is most trusted, and a nearby town. Your business name is never in the question.
- Three assistants. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, each with live web search on. Fifteen answers in all.
- Points for each answer. Named first: 100. Top three: 70. Named lower down: 40. Looked up by name but left out: 10. Not mentioned: 0.
- The average. Total points divided by fifteen, rounded to a whole number.
The “looked up, then left out” case is possible to see because ChatGPT and Gemini show the searches they run before answering. It is worth knowing about: the assistant already knows you exist, and your website just did not give it a clear answer to repeat.
What is a good score?
Each answer names only a few businesses, so most businesses score low. 30 to 50 means you are named regularly. Over 60 means you are usually one of the first names given. The most useful comparison is your own score over time, with the same questions.
Why it moves around a little
AI answers are not fixed. Ask the same question twice and the list can change. That is why the questions are locked, the scoring never changes, and the model versions are written down. A few points either way between months is normal; a steady climb is a real change.
What raises it
The same things that get a business named in the first place: a page that matches the question, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings on the directories the assistants read, real reviews, and mentions on other sites. Our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT walks through each one.

Common questions
Is an AI Visibility Score the same as a Google ranking?
No. A Google ranking is your position for a search. An AI Visibility Score measures whether AI assistants name you in their written answers, which draw on Google but also on directories, reviews and other sites.
Which AI assistants are included?
ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity, all with live web search switched on. Together they are the assistants customers use most, and Gemini comes from Google, the company behind AI Overviews.
How often should I check my score?
Monthly is enough. AI answers vary day to day, so checking more often mostly measures noise. Our Score Watch plan re-runs it every month for $99.
Can I calculate my own score?
Yes. Ask the assistants five customer questions without using your name, note where you appear in each answer, and apply the points above. Keep the questions identical next time.
