Who we serve

Building products manufacturers

Your products are specified, not bought on impulse — and specification now starts with a question typed into an assistant. If you are not in that answer, you were never on the longlist.

Building products sit in an unusual position. The buyer is rarely the user. The specifier is often an architect, engineer or contractor working to a deadline, comparing options they may not have used before, under pressure to justify the choice. That is research-heavy purchasing — and research is exactly the behaviour that has migrated to AI assistants fastest.

Why this category is unusually exposed

Specification is a longlist process

The specifier assembles a set of candidates before evaluating any of them seriously. Omission at that stage is invisible and final — nobody rejected you, you were simply never considered.

The documentation is the product

Performance data, test results, code compliance, warranty terms. This is what gets compared. It is also, on most manufacturer sites, exactly what is locked inside PDFs where a machine cannot read it.

Comparative questions dominate

“Which is better for a coastal installation?” is a comparison question, and comparison questions are the ones AI systems answer most confidently — with a named shortlist.

Channel obscures the gap

Selling through distribution and rep networks makes it genuinely hard to notice you are absent from the research stage, because the demand you do see arrives through a channel that hides its origin.

What we typically find

These recur often enough across the category to be worth stating plainly. They are not a diagnosis of your site — that requires testing — but they are where the evidence usually leads.

  • Technical data available only as downloads. The specification sheet is the most citable asset a building products manufacturer owns, and it is almost always a PDF behind a link.
  • Product catalogues that render empty. Filterable product finders built as applications frequently return nothing to a crawler.
  • No comparison content. Specifiers compare. If the only comparisons in your category were written by a competitor or a trade publication, those are what get cited.
  • Code and standards compliance buried. Compliance is often the decisive criterion and is frequently mentioned only inside a document nothing can read.
  • Missing or malformed structured data. Product markup is rare across the category, and where present is often broken.
What this is not

This is not a claim that AI assistants are replacing architects, specifiers or rep relationships. They are not. It is a narrower and more testable claim: a growing share of the longlist stage now happens inside these tools, and being absent there removes you before any human judgement is applied. Whether that is happening to you is a question with an answer, and the answer takes an afternoon to get.

How we work with building products manufacturers

1

Test the specification questions

We build the questions a specifier actually asks — material comparisons, code compliance, application suitability — and run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. You get the transcripts.

2

Free the technical data

Specification data published as readable, structured content alongside the PDFs rather than only inside them. This is usually the single highest-impact change in this category.

3

Publish the comparisons

The comparative content specifiers are looking for, written from your own technical data, in the form these systems quote.

Questions

Before you ask

Do you work with manufacturers or with their reps?

Directly with manufacturers. The work involves your specifications, your documentation and your website, so it needs whoever controls those. Rep networks benefit downstream, but they are not who we engage with.

We sell through distribution. Does this still apply?

It applies more, not less. When a specifier asks an assistant which manufacturers to consider, distribution does not put you in that answer. If anything, selling through channel makes the direct visibility gap easier to miss, because the channel obscures where demand originates.

Our products are specified by architects, not bought online. Is this relevant?

That is precisely the case where it matters most. Specification is a research-heavy process, and research is exactly what has moved to these tools. An assistant that omits you at the longlist stage has removed you before any human evaluation begins.

What about CAD, BIM and Revit files?

We publish and optimise what you provide. Producing the files themselves is a different discipline and we do not pretend otherwise. What we can do is make sure the ones you have are discoverable rather than buried.

Find out what AI says about you

We run the buyer questions in your category through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google Gemini, and send you a short report showing whether you appear, who appears instead, and why. No cost, no obligation, no sales call required to receive it.
